Located about 65 miles outside of Anchorage, Alaska, lies the city of Wasilla. Previously known for its world-famous Iditarod Sled Dog races, Iron Dog Sled races and its plentiful outdoor recreational activities, Wasilla is also known as the home of former Alaskan governor and former Republican vice presidential candidate, Sara Palin and her family.
Wasilla is part of the Matanuska-Susitna (Mat-Su) Valley, which boasts many beautiful lakes, glaciers and mines as part of its natural environment. Residents have long enjoyed the fishing, camping, boating and hiking opportunities offered in this area. With the population growth during the last decade, many other recreation and activity choices are available including fine dining, shopping, movies, golf and more.
Wasilla is the fourth largest city in Alaska, and is part of the Anchorage metropolitan area. Having grown in size to over 10,000 residents, Wasilla has nearly doubled in size since 2000 and has become a popular commuter suburb for Anchorage, with about 35% of the residents commuting to the larger city each day. Locally, the main employers in Wasilla are government, tourism, agriculture and steel manufacturing companies. Additionally, business has been growing in Wasilla over the past decade, with many big name stores opening up in strip malls and shopping centers. Four high schools, one airport, one medical center, and many churches tend to the various needs of the Wasilla community.
The climate in Wasilla varies widely during the course of the year, with a full range of seasons. The winters can be harsh and cold with temperatures well below zero, however, the summer days are typically very mild and pleasant, at nearly 70 degrees, while the nights are cool, affording residents and tourists alike plenty of chances to enjoy the great outdoors without having to endure the elements.
Sara Palin served as mayor of Wasilla from 1996-2002, after serving two terms on the city council. Following her second term as mayor, she was elected governor of Alaska, and eventually nominated to be the running mate of Republican John McCain in 2008, as the vice presidential candidate.
